They were tied in a survey before the debate. The error margin is plus or minus three percentage points. Newsweek found Mr. Bush was backed by 50% and Mr. Kerry was supported by 44% in a poll with a margin of error of four percentage points. In polls by the Washington Post, Reuters/Zogby International, Time magazine and George Washington University, the results were within the margin of error. Mr. Bush was backed by 50% likely voters in the Post poll, and Mr. Kerry was supported by 47%. In the Reuters/ Zogby survey, Mr. Bush led Mr. Kerry 46% to 44%. Mr. Bush had 48% support to Mr. Kerry's 46% in the Time poll. George Washington University's poll put Mr. Bush at 49% to Mr. Kerry's 46%. Mr. Bush campaigned in Florida on Saturday and he returns there this week. He will stop today in New Jersey, a state he lost in 2000 by 15.8 percentage points. A poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, N.J., found the race to be a dead heat there with Mr. Kerry supported by 44% and Mr. Bush 42%. The poll was conducted Oct. 8-14 and has a 4.5 percentage point margin of error. |
