Summary: | Thatcher, who was convicted of bludgeoning JoAnn Wilson 20 times with a sharp instrument before pumping a bullet through her brain in 1983, can now practise his putting on a nine-hole golf course at Ferndale minimum-security prison in Mission, B.C. At Ferndale, the front gate is always open, but a metre-high chain-link fence does surround the penitentiary. The National Post has learned that Thatcher, son of Ross Thatcher, a former Liberal premier of Saskatchewan, was quietly moved to Ferndale from a maximum-security institution in Edmonton about six months ago. Inmates at the minimum-security prison share duplex-style homes with television and telephones, and can leave the prison grounds for jobs or volunteer work in the community. ; Color Photo: Saskatoon Star- Phoenix / [Colin Thatcher], seen here in 1996, was convicted in 1984 of killing his ex-wife. ; |
