Summary:The negotiations with our Faculty Association brought upon an agreement, rather than a strike as Mr. [David Gratzer] had anticipated. It is fact, however, that the Board of Governors of the University of Manitoba sought mandatory retirement. A known retirement age permits long-range planning, the renewal of the university, and provides the fiscal means to do so. Contrary to Mr. Gratzer's characterization, the University of Manitoba did not seek mandatory retirement as a way to remove underperforming faculty members, or to "downsize" the faculty.
