Summary:TONY Blair yesterday braced Britain for a sharp escalation in the Afghanistan campaign and the imminent deployment of ground troops, proclaiming the "next few weeks will be the most testing time" in the global war against terrorism. Mr Blair called a meeting of his war cabinet yesterday and rejected the idea of a respite in the bombing to allow the passage of humanitarian aid. "The sooner we make progress militarily, the sooner we can stabilise the humanitarian situation," a Downing Street spokesman said. The White House was also urging Israel not to resume its attacks on Palestinian forces in revenge for Wednesday's assassination of Rehavam Zeevi, its tourism minister, by a radical PLO faction. Israeli tanks rolled into two West Bank towns yesterday as the first stage in what Israel said would be full retribution until the terrorists were handed over.
