He added: "Birmingham has had a pretty quiet time in recent years and has been falling behind other UK cities in the bid stakes - it lost the bid for European Capital of Culture, it did not get the National Stadium and it missed out on the Super Casino. The news adds to the previous announcement that the city will host the Conservative party conference from 2008, so I hope Birmingham is on a bit of a run. "This vital preparation work is ongoing and now we know the Americans are over here and in Birmingham the economic spin-offs will be immense."
