Summary:Sir, - I read with concern your articles about pressures on development control in Birmingham City Council and the comments of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. While staff productivity has increased significantly and the quality of development has been raised - last year my department was awarded the Royal Town Planning Institute's Special Award for Special Achievement in terms of the regeneration of the city centre - the time in which it has taken to process planning applications has regrettably deteriorated. The establishment of a major developments team to improve the handling of planning applications in consultation with developers and local communities. This has had significant benefits for those big schemes that are vital to the regeneration of the city's economy, eg the Bull Ring, Arena Central, and industrial development such as SENDO.
