Summary:In the course of the discussion, I suggested that the key error had been the Israeli army's lack of complete control of the Beirut-Damascus highway as the most important strategic asset in the country along with control of the city of Beirut and of Beirut airport. If Israel, the US or other friendly forces controlled these, it was possible to limit Syrian influence in Lebanon and to make progress toward a satisfactory outcome. To my surprise, he not only seconded the thought, he seized upon it, embracing it with enthusiasm as a clarification and confirmation of his own analysis. While there were many factors, in his view, that went into the failure in Lebanon, the lack of control of the Beirut-Damascus highway had been the critical one.
