Summary: | Sir, - Your editorial "What friends?" (August 25) concerning a resolution adopted in Durban, South Africa, by the foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement includes the following: "Signatories to the resolution include most of Africa, Asia and South and Central America, as well as two new EU members - Cyprus and Malta." Cyprus has been granted the status of guest in the Non-Aligned Movement, and in that capacity participated, along with other EU member states, only in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Durban ministerial meeting. The Republic's ambassador in South Africa, and not the Cypriot minister of foreign affairs, represented Cyprus in both ceremonies. Sir, - As a Londoner visiting Jerusalem I was bemused by the Israeli authorities' apparent uncertainty over how to deal with the demand by British activist and occasional journalist Ewa Jasiewicz that she be freely admitted into Israel ("Detained journalist: I came to write about local peace movement," August 24). |
