Summary: | Sir, - Ruthie Blum's interview with outgoing Manufacturers Association president Oded Tyrah illuminated the shortcomings of the secular sabra mind ("Making it his business," Upfront, July 9). While it was encouraging to see Tyrah referring to the main Arab political groups in Gaza as "a bunch of gangs," he then said we need more areas like the Erez Industrial Zone - even though Gil Hoffman reported in the same issue that Tyrah would be "involved in the process of moving factories from the Erez Industrial Zone to the Negev in an effort to stimulate employment in the region" ("Tyrah to serve as Gaza evacuation adviser"). The Erez zone is being shut down because it does not work; yet Tyrah wants 40 more Erezes. He does not see that this zone has robbed Israeli workers of a livelihood and thinks the Arabs can be educated to see that "they have much to lose" when gangsters do not think this way. Nor does he see that Jewish capital and Arab labor is a recipe for more Jewish bosses and more Arab resentment. He fantasizes that shutting the Arabs out will only "increase their hatred," when they hate us enough now to massacre us as often as they can. |
