Summary: | Sir, - Amotz Asa-El claims that Ariel Sharon was elected in February 2003 partly because of his support for a Palestinian state and therefore opposition to his Gaza withdrawal plan is the unfair work of hard-line ideologues such as Uzi Landau and the settlers ("Mikhail Suslov returns," May 28). I should like to remind him that in Israel we vote for parties and not for individuals. Sir, - I despair when I read articles such as "Tali Fahima - a foot in each world" (June 2). After over 40 years' research in all aspects of the Arab-Jewish problem, I have come to the conclusion that if one refers to facts that are unassailable, not one basic claim made by the Arabs can be substantiated. The Palestinian Arab Zakaria Zubeidi told Fahima "things I never knew, things Israel tried to hide from me since Israel tells a one-sided story. He, for example, told me about the occupation." Sir, - Re "Christian exodus from Holy Land troubles Vatican" (May 28): Christians have been leaving the Palestinian Authority areas for the simple reason that they are threatened by members of the Muslim community, have to pay protection money to continue in business, are subjected to physical attack, and suffer their women being raped. The Palestinian security forces do little; numerous appeals by Christians to Yasser Arafat have produced nothing. |
