Summary:In the room temporarily put at [Raphael Benmoha]'s disposal by a Jewish social service, police found a set of keys to the center and markers matching those used to scribble the anti-Semitic inscriptions. In addition, Benmoha's handwriting is similar to the inscriptions. One scenario posits that Benmoha acted out of concern for his future. The center was about to close and the premises to be sold. "Benmoha probably thought that by torching the center and making believe it was an anti- Semitic action, it would compel the Jewish Consistoire of Paris, the owner of the place, to rehabilitate the premises and go on with the soup kitchen service," the police source said. He spent some time as a guard in a Jewish home for lone women in Paris. When the institution closed down, he lived off the compensation for three years, then French welfare. He came almost daily to the soup kitchen. Benmoha said he has family in France, Morocco, and Israel.
