Summary:The world's population reached 6 billion about two weeks ago, according to the United Nations. That is four times the number at the beginning of this century, and a billion more than in 1987. Organizations and governments have pushed for more girls' education, more basic medicines and clinics to save infants' lives, and more information and services allowing couples to make their own informed choices about how many children to have. As a result, couples around the world have found it sensible to have fewer children.
