Profits at manufacturers will rise 6.8 percent in the fiscal year that ends March 31, while nonmanufacturers also expect earnings to gain 6.8 percent. Fuji Photo, the world's biggest maker of film used in flat-panel displays, said Monday that it had spent l150 million, or $260 million, to buy Avecia Group's inkjet business in Britain. Fuji Photo is expanding its chemicals and materials business to meet escalating demand for ink used in printers and film used in flat-panel displays. The company spent almost $250 million this year to buy the Arch Chemicals unit of Planar Solutions and the ink maker Sericol Group.
