Summary: | Two words -- buy it. There are only 500 copies (at least in the initial pressing) and they're selling fast. Eleven pieces especially written for the APO to celebrate the turn of the millennium showcase emergent and established composers in this exciting disc of short fanfares. If you think you're in for the standard trumpet varieties you will be pleasantly surprised as all the composers interpret the brief in novel ways, ranging from the depiction of a volcano eruption ([John Rimmer]'s Vulcan) to Christchurch composer Chris Cree Brown's quirky depiction of the Y2K menace (or, as we now know, fizzle) in Y2K Pacemaker. Other echoes by Eve de Castro- Robinson is remarkable for the cacophony of birdsong effects, reconstructing the call of the extinct New Zealand bird, the huia. It really does have to be heard to be believed! A superb disc, intelligent sound engineering and some great sounds from some of our best -- what more could you ask for? -- [Patrick Shepherd] |
