Summary:Mrs [Jenny Shipley] had no need to consult Mr Peters about the challenge to Prime Minister Jim Bolger. It was a matter strictly for the National Party, not his, even if NZ First's unpopularity laid the groundwork for it happening. If Mr [Winston Peters] was so concerned about keeping Mr Bolger at the helm, he and his party should have acted a lot differently before now. Always quick to quote from the coalition agreement, Mr Peters has on this occasion conveniently chosen to ignore it. It begins: "This agreement, made this 10th day of December 1996, between New Zealand First and the New Zealand National Party ..." Nowhere does it say: "This agreement, made between Jim Bolger and Winston Peters". It lies in inflated egos being bruised, in an unplanned hurdle placed in the way of ambition, perhaps even in the end of a dream of being prime minister. Mrs Shipley presents a more immovable object for Winston Peters than did Mr Bolger, and there may now be some stark reminders that NZ First has 17 MPs in this coalition and National 44.
