Summary:Producers have been jousting with the monumental novel since 1965, when screenwriter Waldo Salt (Midnight Cowboy, Serpico) first adapted it. Richard Burton and Buddy Hackett were the first actors who stood ready to play [Don] Quixote and his sidekick, Sancho Panza. The most recent were John Cleese and Robin Williams, who were due to be directed by Fred Schepisi in 1997. [Bobby] Geisler and director Emir Kusturica are still searching for a Lisa to play opposite [Johnny] Depp. Among the actresses they have talked with: Nicole Kidman, Juliette Binoche, Holly Hunter, Cate Blanchett, Mira Sorvino, Natasha Richardson, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Lena Olin. Meanwhile, Depp has dropped out of The Libertine. The actor shooting Tim Burtons The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was to play the Earl of Rochester, a rake and confidant of King Charles II. One source claims director John Malkovich found Depp impossible to work with. But a rep for Malkovich insists they parted ways because of scheduling problems. John is eager to work with Johnny [Depp] in the future.
