Summary: | DOUBLE PLAY Sir William Walton: Troilus and Cressida Soloists, Chorus & Orchestraof Opera North conducted by Richard Hickox (Chandos CHAN 9370/1; two CDs) But hold - there is consolation yet. The language of love is as sultry and seductive as an Ischian sunset. A brush of harps, a sizzle of cymbal, and Walton's orchestra is an Ischian sunset. He graces Cressida with music as lush and affecting as any from his pen. Exotic arabesques lend enchantment to her arias, but there is a haunted, haunting remorse, too, and in that climactic moment where she refuses to denounce Troilus but quietly kneels before him, Walton does finally find a deeper truth. His reticence there is in marked contrast to the big love scene, where passions are consumed in a storm interlude whose swooping horns promise Hollywood immortality. |
