Summary: | In between, the cellist Raphael Wallfisch, completely invisible from where I sat, played, with Carey again, some awkward-sounding arrangements for cello and organ of three of the Schubler Chorales by Bach, and Carey played through a couple of uninteresting French organ solos. The only substantial work in this hour-long programme was Sofia Gubaidulina's In Croce for cello and organ. This rather compelling meditation on Christ on the cross was adequately dispatched; but without any suitable context created for it, this Good Friday piece felt flat amid the tinsel of Christmas which hovered around it. |
