Summary: | Diageo, maker of Smirnoff vodka and Johnnie Walker scotch, hasn't officially joined the group attempting to form a new bid for Allied and could take several weeks before it does, these people said. Diageo can't launch its own bid for Allied because of antitrust concerns but may be in a position to take a few brands from Allied's portfolio in the event of a sale. Diageo lacks a bourbon offering, and would be interested in acquiring Allied's Maker's Mark brand. It could also beef up its relatively underdeveloped wine portfolio by acquiring all or part of Allied's large stable of wine brands, which include Mumm champagne and Clos du Bois wine. |
