Summary:He helped make The Wall Street Journal great. He didn't do it alone, of course. It grew to greatness during the 1950s and 1960s because it had benevolent owners, visionary managers, old-fashioned reporters, new-fashioned technology, and shrewd marketers. Its reporters made it believable, its editors made it reliable and its technicians made it available everywhere every morning. So it is sad to note that he died last week, at 82, back home in North Carolina. It is sad to think that his charm, his grace, his wit -- as well as that wonderful name -- are no more. (The family traditionally named its children after states, and Royster would refer to Uncle Wis or his relative Iowa Michigan Royster. I asked him why the tradition stopped, and he said a relative named a son Nathaniel Confederate States Royster, ``taking in the whole South and irritating the whole family.'' It was too good a story to check out.)
