The deficit is declining. Children graduate from high school and college in record numbers. We live longer than ever. Old diseases disappear faster than new ones crop up. Crime is declining. Nearly half the population spends more than 4 hours a week volunteering in churches and schools. More than 75% of us give money to charity. We overwhelmingly believe in God and go to church. America is at peace. But 39 million persons live below the poverty level -- 15% of the nation. There are 15 million children below the poverty level -- 22% of all our children. There are 3.75 million old people below the poverty level -- 12% of all our aged. |
