Summary: | There are five countries in this world where 1 of every 4 children dies before reaching age 5, another dozen or so where 1 in 5 dies, and nearly 50 nations where 1 of every 10 children dies before his fifth birthday. (In the United States, it's one in 100). There are about 25 million children in the world who have been uprooted from their homes and forced to flee -- to flee war or the tyranny that follows war or the famine and disease that accompany it. In 64 countries, hundreds of thousands of children have been maimed or killed just by land mines. All told, estimates UNICEF, in the past decade wars and their accompanying famines and diseases have killed 2 million children, disabled twice that many, and left homeless six times that number. |
