Summary: | Pennsylvania's live music scene has blossomed over the years. Our state provides many opportunities to catch both national and regional jam bands as well as old-school legends. But let's just disregard the term "jam band" for now. It is merely a label used to describe a sound that is somewhat indescribable. Instead, this column will focus on bands that amplify creativity, passion, songwriting and improvisation. My intention is to keep Shinbone readers aware of jam oriented shows happening within Pennsylvania. So get your car an oil change, check your tire pressure and prepare for a road trip. Here's a weekend run sure to make your head eject. Umphrey's McGee and Tea Leaf Green storm the Electric Factory, Phila. on Friday. Umphrey's Mcgee, a progressive rock outfit from Chicago, has drawn comparisons to King Crimson. Tea Leaf Green is a product of the San Francisco scene; their blend of flex and release jams, clever songwriting and rock and roll instincts make them a force to be reckoned with onstage. Cap off an amazing month of music when [Bob Dylan] appears Sunday evening at the Star Pavilion in Hershey. Dylan is a rare artistic phenomenon who's written some of the most influential and memorable songs in the history of American music. He single-handedly made pop music a credible art form. His experiment with electric instruments in the 60s created the folk-rock movement. What makes Dylan's talent so amazingly rare is that his lyrics have the power to attack the emotions of the listener and make them feel the artist's pain. |
