Summary: | Dear Martha Carr: I have lived in the Central West End for most of my adult life - over 50 years - and until recently, I have never felt frightened or threatened when I was on the street. I did almost all my shopping there, and I felt free to go out whenever I wanted to. Now, every time I pick up a newspaper or turn on the television news, the first thing I see is the crime report. It terrifies me! It could happen to me! I am a single woman, 72, with the beginnings of Parkinson's disease, so that it is difficult for me to run, let alone walk fast. I feel vulnerable all the time - if I am going to do my marketing (with money in my purse) or coming home (with my groceries and, maybe, some money), or in bed at night. |
