Summary:COMPUTER hackers have found a new way to break into computers through the global Internet system, a United States government security agency has discovered. It leaves many of the 20 million government, business, university and home computers on the Internet - a web of interconnected computers that exchange electronic messages, documents and programs - vulnerable to eavesdropping and theft. The first known attack using the new technique occurred on Christmas Day against the computer of a security expert at the San Diego Supercomputer Centre in California. An unknown intruder took over his computer and electronically stole security programs he had developed. Other attacks have since been reported.
