Summary:THE government of the Comoros Islands, fighting its 17th coup attempt in 20 years, called on France yesterday to send troops to restore order and capture the insurgents' leader, Bob Denard. But the French foreign ministry refused to do more than issue a "firm condemnation" of the coup attempt which began on Wednesday in its former island colony between the eastern African coast and north-west Madagascar. The French news agency AFP said government troops had surrounded the army camp near the capital where rebels are holding President Said Mohamed Djohar. Government ministers are said to have taken refuge in the French embassy. Sultan Chouzour, a former ambassador to France, said the police were resisting but the mercenaries appeared to have more firepower and were poised for a takeover.
