Summary: | [Edgar Sowton] was a pioneer in the development of heart pacemakers. He tackled the problem of heart rhythm abnormalities and was at the forefront of the development of devices for their control. He was one of the first British exponents of the revolutionary technique of balloon dilatation of coronary artery narrowings, saving many patients from the traumas of open heart surgery. Sowton's outstanding career began at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he completed both physics and medical degrees simultaneously in 1957. His subsequent MD thesis was judged to be the best of his year and he was awarded the Horton-Smith Prize in 1964. |
