Summary:I've watched the spread of the Christian Coalition since Rev. Pat Robertson began pushing it on his TV show. His televised warfare plans were classic going-into-battle pep-rally tactics as he mobilized troops and demonized "enemies." Robertson took God-is-on-our-side rhetoric to fervor unmatched by great military generals. He claimed unique illumination from God Almighty: "We're seeing the Christian Coalition rise to where God intends it to be . . . as one of the most powerful political forces . . . in the history of America." Robertson's assessment is acute of contemporary America's confusion and fear. He recognizes how easy it has become to pledge allegiance to a message of fear, anger and blame, particularly when it comes wrapped up as "Christianity." He capitalizes on our thirst for leadership, understanding and "self-esteem" with his extraordinary brand of paranoia and xenophobia. His fear-mongering mingles with this messianic message: The Christian Coalition is the single, simple solution; Christian-Coalition voter guidance is "God's will"; he has God's word on it.
