Summary:U.S. Sen. Paul Simon and his "Bow Tie Brigade" trooped into the Illinois State Fair Thursday as the featured attraction of Democrat Day, a day of party unity that Democratic officials consider an important part of coming back from "the debacle of 1986." Simon is happy with polls showing him behind Rev. Jesse Jackson but ahead of the five other candidates in the Democratic field. As a result, he said, fundraising has not been a problem. From the fundraiser, where Simon was greeted by State Sen. Vince Demuzio (D., Carlinville) as "the frontrunner in Illinois," Simon, state officials, the Democrats and members of the Bow Tie Brigade, dressed in red T- shirts displaying Simon's distinctive trademark, went to the state fairgrounds for a rally.
