Summary:Is bicycle transportation being ignored in the rush to expand I-15 and build a light-rail system in Salt Lake County? Halting progress for Salt Lake City bicycle-commuter routes has been the rule since the early 1970s, when Jake Garn was mayor. But bicycle proponents say transportation talk creates new awareness of two-wheeled travel. Bicycle-transit progress in Salt Lake City accelerated after alternative-transportation coordinator Julie Eldridge was hired. Eldridge created the annual May bicycle festival, Cycle Salt Lake, and published the city's bicycle-route map. She is no longer with the city, but bicycle transportation and recreation progress continues.
