Summary:[Mike Hadley], whose family moved to the East Coast shortly after he began the program, was so committed to getting a jump on college he moved back to Salt Lake City to live with relatives. The program was initially begun in Switzerland 30 years ago as an international school for the children of diplomats, said Connie Jeanne Larsen, coordinator of the West High program. West is one of 130 schools in the United States that offer the program. And since the program is international in scope, Mike attends one of some 500 schools in over 70 countries around the world. An extended essay of 3,000 to 5,000 words is also required of students to test their critical thinking skills, said Ms. Larsen. Essays this year ranged from the success or failure of Christianity to the causes of homosexuality.
