Summary: | The Tempo feature "Priests for hire" (Aug. 22) did a disservice to Tribune readers--particularly those who are Catholic--by presenting as fact what amounts to a broad misinterpretation of Catholic Church teaching as regards the rights and responsibilities of inactive or laicized priests. To report, as the Tribune article did, that inactive or resigned priests "may not turn away any calls for help in an emergency situation"--and then to suggest that the word "emergency" is open to interpretation--is an oversimplification. To equate "an emergency situation" with the situation of divorced Catholics who wish to remarry within the Catholic Church--but who are unwilling to seek a Catholic annulment--is patently false. |
