Summary:After appearing to embrace the new last year by crowning dc Talk artist of the year, Gospel Music Association voters flocked back to the familiar on Thursday night, naming Chapman artist of the year for the fifth time, male vocalist of the year for the fourth time and songwriter of the year the eighth time. Toby McKeehan, boasting an unprecedented 13 nominations going into the evening, managed to land five awards, more than any other artist. Four were for his work with dc Talk -- including rock song of the year for Like It, Love It, Need It; pop/contemporary song for Between You and Me; rock album for Jesus Freak; and short form music video for the song Jesus Freak. [CeCe] Winans repeated her '96 victory as female vocalist of the year, when she became the first black artist to win that award. Thursday night she also won Dove Awards for contemporary gospel song, for Take Me Back, and for special event album, for her contribution to Tribute: The Songs of Andrae Crouch.
