Summary:An obituary for Kenneth Anger, the filmmaker who died on May 11, 2023 at 96-years-old, is presented. Anger was born in Santa Monica CA, and became a leading figure in US avant-garde cinema and moving-image art, best known for transgressive, boundary-pushing films such as Fireworks (1947)- one of the earliest examples of explicitly queer experimental cinema- and Scorpio Rising (1963), an intentionally blasphemous mix of religion and authoritarian violence which included clips of leather-clad bikers spliced with Christian and Nazi iconography. Both films helped lay new ground for American underground film and pop culture.
