Summary: | Reconstruction of lost works has been a hallmark of the Joffrey Ballet in recent years, and one of the more intriguing so far is "Les Presages," Leonide Massine's fanciful, eccentric 1933 experiment, performed Thursday at the Civic Opera House. Created for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, "Les Presages" is ripe with hokum, albeit the streamlined, deco-washed hokum of "R.U.R." and even "Flash Gordon"-the Cubist backdrop and sci-fi costumes come from painter Andre Masson. The daring modernism, though quaint now, recalls one of the most fertile periods in Western culture, while Massine's avuncular take is a snapshot of its time and an amusing, luscious rhapsody. |
