Summary: | In the face of rising opposition from Capitol Hill, President Clinton met with America's top military officers Monday and reiterated his determination to lift the 50-year ban on gays in the armed forces. Clinton met with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the White House for nearly two hours, but apparently neither side was swayed by the other's arguments on whether the military should end its ban on avowed homosexuals. Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has strongly endorsed the existing ban. Nunn said he plans to invite military leaders to discuss their opposition at hearings later this year. |
