Summary:For more than two decades, the Barrington Area Council of Governments has been the unified voice for the rural, countryside towns in the area. It has been the guardian of the open space and low density that characterizes these far northwest suburbs. Even without the force of law, the organization has laid down a regional approach to planning and land use that has been the cornerstone in the area's careful growth. When a major development such as the proposed expansion of Good Shepherd Hospital in Lake Barrington arises, the issue is brought before all eight towns. In their monthly meetings, the village presidents discuss such proposals: What it means for the residents, how it will affect the environment, and whether it will set any dangerous precedents.
