Summary:Atty. Gen. Neil Hartigan's campaign for governor accepted a $50,000 contribution from a company his office is suing to recover $2.8 million allegedly funneled out of two Illinois insurance companies. The contribution, one of the largest to Hartigan's campaign, was made by Towers Collection Service, Inc., a subsidiary of a New York company that owned Associated Life Insurance Co. and United Fire Insurance Co., both liquidated by state regulators in 1989 after a judge found them insolvent and ruled that "further transaction of business would be hazardous to its policyholders." On Wednesday, following an inquiry from a reporter about the attorney general's role in suing the companies on behalf of the state, deputy attorney general Michael Hayes said he would recommend that the campaign return the money to the New York-based firm.
