Summary: | From his family's camper at the McHenry County Fairgrounds in Woodstock, Matt Peeters would think twice before cutting through the carnival midway and across Illinois Highway 47 to buy a cheeseburger at one of the many fast-food joints nearby. The 7th grader's time is filled caring for the pigs he has entered in the 4-H competition. And besides, his prize-winning entry in the special project judging is a display showing how much garbage fast-food chains produce. Some of the youths were inspired by a 4-H pilot program begun this year called "Kids for Conservation." The program, sponsored in part by the Illinois Department of Conservation, sends kids a quarterly magazine stressing the importance of the environment. Some 4-H members developed their fair projects from articles in the magazine, said Sheri Seibold, McHenry County 4-H youth adviser. |
