Summary: | Conservative Republican Steven Baer entered the race for governor Thursday, promoting low-tax and anti-abortion policies that he contends will reverse the declining fortunes of the state's economy and GOP. "We aim to present the Republican voters of Illinois with a real choice between the mainstream conservative values of the Republican national platform and the special interest liberalism that dominates the powers-that-be in Springfield today," Baer said in declaring his primary challenge to Secretary of State Jim Edgar. Edgar, branded by Baer as a "liberal Republican," has endorsed a permanent extension of the tax increase as a way of ensuring continuity in funding for education and local government. And Edgar supports abortion rights while Baer opposes abortion except in instances to save the mother's life. |
