Summary:Cook County Recorder of Deeds Carol Moseley Braun is actively lobbying to become a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, a move that could put gubernatorial hopeful Neil Hartigan in the politically discomforting position of shunning the party's top black, female elected official as a running mate. Braun said Wednesday that she has expressed her interest in running for the state's No. 2 office to both Hartigan, the two-term attorney general, and Chicago lawyer Richard Phelan, scheduled to announce Thursday whether he will pursue a campaign for governor. Braun said she discussed the ticket and her chances of running with Hartigan when the two met over breakfast at the Drake Hotel on Tuesday. She said Phelan came to her office last Thursday to recruit her should he decide to run. "I have not made a commitment either way," Braun said.
