Summary: | The enmity generated by Mayor Eugene Sawyer's bitterly fought battle to succeed the late Harold Washington has resulted in more than a score of Democratic committeeman contests in the March 15 primary election, in what amounts to the first referendum on the Chicago City Council vote to seat Sawyer over Ald. Timothy Evans (4th). What had been anticipated as an uneventful election year for a partisan post that has diminished in importance as the influence of patronage has waned broke open on the last day of candidate filings Monday, with battles for Democratic committeeman emerging in all but 20 of the city's 50 wards. Pucinski, a Metropolitan Sanitary District commissioner, also must compete with former Mayor Jane Byrne and Sanitary District commissioner Thomas Fuller. In the last week Pucinski has come under fire in the black community not only for the past opposition of her father, Ald. Roman Pucinski (41st), to Mayor Washington, but because she is seeking a delegate spotin support of presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Paul Simon (D., Ill.) rather than Jesse Jackson. |
