Summary:Gov. James Thompson is vowing to take steps against any members of an antagonistic, conservative wing of the state Republican Party who act like "jerks" during Vice President George Bush's appearance Saturday before the GOP state convention. In a move to exert control over the convention, Thompson urged party leaders at a Friday afternoon caucus of county GOP chairmen to close ranks and prevent opposition to his proposed state income tax from disrupting the convention. The governor asked them to leave taxes as an issue to be resolved between himself and the General Assembly. Administration forces on the convention platform committee later allowed the watering down of a plank in the party platform that would have endorsed Thompson's tax plan. But they then preempted a move by tax opponents to issue a minority report that would have been a rallying point on the convention floor for the "Just Say No!" to taxes coalition.
