Summary: | Plans for a new Burbank Airport terminal were suspended Monday after the Airport Authority sidelined a request for Burbank to approve tax-exempt bonds for the project, citing an uphill political fight. Blaming an upcoming municipal election for fanning controversy over the airport's $350 million expansion, the nine-member Burbank-Glendale Pasadena Airport Authority voted 6-0, with three absences, to ask the city to delay a public hearing on the bond issue. In a Feb. 28 primary election, Robert C. Kramer won one of two vacant seats on the Burbank City Council. Former City Councilwoman Mary Lou Howard and retired aerospace specialist Ted McConkey won the right to compete for a second seat in the April 11 runoff. All three oppose the airport expansion, saying it would increase noise and disruption to Burbank residents. Their opposition places in doubt the ability of the Airport Authority to convince the new council to float the necessary tax-exempt bonds to pay for the project, airport officials say. |
