Summary:Struggling to cope with costly sex scandals, leaders of the Diocese of Santa Rosa on Friday began to "trim, cut and slash" parochial schools and other programs in a bid to avoid insolvency. "There was not enough oversight here," Monsignor John Brenkle said after a closed-door meeting with about 60 people in the school library. "Just as there is not enough oversight at the diocese in Santa Rosa." The annual revenue for the diocese is about $2 million, covering the costs of the chancery and a variety of educational, social and religious programs. It also provides subsidies for other programs, including the struggling Eureka schools, which have received $2 million over the past 13 years -- half of that total since 1996, according to Brenkle.
