Summary: | Newsday's report on the oversight hearings conducted by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) on the truth behind former football star Cpl. Pat Tillman's death in Afghanistan and former Pfc. Jessica Lynch's capture in Iraq was very enlightening ["Heroic death 'utter fiction,' " News, April 25]. Let's not fool ourselves. The qualifications begin with whom you know (D'[Amato]'s wife) and a self-serving motivation, so volunteers would never be considered. Al D'Amato's family has been feeding at the public taxpayers' trough for years, and his powerful political connections will get him whatever he wants. Taking these health benefits is an act of shameless, in-your-face greed, and D'Amato's being associated with it makes it even more vile to me. Everyone should take a serious look at the three factual charges [Dennis Kucinich] lays out in his case for impeaching Vice President Dick Cheney: That he "manipulated the intelligence process . . . by fabricating the threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction" to justify the war in Iraq; that he deceived citizens and Congress "about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al-Qaida" to justify the war, and that he has "openly threatened aggression against the republic of Iran, absent any real threat to the United States." |
