Summary:Heartbreak has given way to anger that in 2006 we allow the use of animal torture devices here on Long Island. I am hopeful that politicians from the governor on down will institute a ban of such devices and in so doing gain votes from the "animal people." We are upstate, downstate and all over Long Island. We love animals, and we vote. The penalty for setting a trap must be consequential, not just a slap on the wrist. Harvey Levinson, chairman of the Nassau Board of Assessors, has some good ideas for alleviating this constant tax burden we face on the Island ["Finding relief from a taxing situation," Opinion, Jan. 23]. He says we could consolidate school districts and sanitation in Nassau and redistribute our tax dollars more evenly. Gov. George Pataki had all the time he needed to address these problems and hasn't; County Executive Tom Suozzi is missing in action on this as well. We have to make our next governor acutely aware of this problem right away and keep the pressure up - demanding that whoever runs for governor pledges to help us turn this tax debacle around. I know these politicians promise us the moon to get elected. But, if they don't do what we need, get rid of them.
