Summary: | DATE FOR ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS SET. Gov. George Pataki has set Feb. 28 as the date for special elections for the Assembly seats formerly held by new Suffolk Legis. Thomas Barraga (R-West Islip) and new Nassau County Clerk Maureen O'Connell. Nassau Republican and Democratic officials said they expect to name candidates for O'Connell's 17th District seat next week. In Suffolk, Democrats have named Ernie Mattace of West Islip, the political director of Local 338, which represents supermarket workers. Republicans have interviewed a half dozen candidates, but Suffolk GOP Chairman Harry Withers said no decision will be made until next week. - RICK BRAND |
