Summary: | Regarding "Mystery That Can't Be Divined" [News, Oct. 19]: It is unbelievable that Jimmy Breslin has so little to write about that he has to constantly give jabs at the Catholic Church. I am, as a Catholic, totally disgusted with him and his commentaries. Breslin's writings show meanness toward the Catholic Church and our pope. He patronizes the pope's health with the statement: "The poor man can't finish speaking. Look what they do to him. They push him in front of a huge throng and he cannot finish. They embarrass him and everybody watching." I am appalled that Breslin thinks Pope [John Paul II] is an embarrassment. Breslin goes on to speak for "everybody." For his information, not everybody watching is embarrassed. What is felt by the people who love and admire the pope is the fortitude he has, in spite of illness, to fulfill his leadership of the Catholic Church. I am proud to have Pope John Paul II as the head of our church. Johanna DeMarco While cockpit and cabin crews are being very thoroughly searched (they must pass through the same security procedures as everyone else), they should be the least of the worries. There are thousands of airport catering, fueling, cleaning and service staff with complete access to all the aircraft on the tarmac. These individuals never pass through metal detectors. To operate aircraft efficiently they must be "turned around" in under a half hour. That means the aircraft must arrive from its destination, be cleaned, reboarded and off to the runway in under 30 minutes. This does not necessarily allot the time needed to complete all the safety procedures properly. While Nathaniel Heatwole's actions were dramatic, the proof is in the pudding. Our skies will never be the same as pre 9/ 11. |
