Summary: | In the late 1790s, there were problems with revolutionary France. Hotheads in President John Adams' Federalist Party wanted war with France, hoping to seize the huge territory of Louisiana. Adams resisted the pressure of the hawks. When Napoleon came to power in France, circumstances changed. Adams' successor, Thomas Jefferson, was able to purchase Louisiana without firing a shot. It looks as though the welfare of America - and perhaps the world - is now being threatened by [George W. Bush]'s apparent drive to outdo his father's flawed 1991 victory in Iraq, whatever price we may have to pay in international discord and American body bags. If Bush successfully whacks Iraq, a GOP victory in 2004 is almost assured, and with it the continuing ability of the party's conservative ideologues to promote their pro-business, pro- deregulation and pro-rich agenda. This is cynicism of chilling magnitude. |
